Season of Discontent? No, not at all! (Part III)

October 31, 2005 · No Comments

Conservative commentators and bloggers continue to strongly disagree with Juan Williams, Fox News contributor, that we are in a “season of discontent.” Juan’s analysis is not only way off the mark, it is being challenged daily by intellectuals on the right, and by the humble author of Thespis Journal. Good news is breaking out all over, just don’t ask Katie Couric and Matt Lauer to tell you. If not actually great news, the news you read from discriminating sources, is vastly different from what the networks and the New York Times want you to believe.
The latest person to state the truth is Michael Barone in a great piece of analysis today at townhall.com. Mr. Barone, a brilliant political thinker and election expert extraordinarie, has blunt langauge in his piece today.

“Much is made of Bush’s current low standing in the polls — though he rates much higher than did Presidents Truman, Nixon and Carter at their low points. But poll results count for less in a re-elected president than performance. Last week’s four events turned some things around. Now Bush and his people must act.”

In addition, Robert Novak has a great column today about George W. Bush moving forward on the supreme court nomination.

Keep the good news coming!

Sweeny Todd at the Eugene O’Neill

October 30, 2005 · No Comments

There is an in depth article at The New York Times regarding the new production of Sweeny Todd at the Eugene O’Neil Theater on 49th Street and Broadway on Manhattan. The production (with actors doubling as instrumentalists) has sounded strange to me since I first heard of it.
An unbelievable amount of information may be found the official web site of this revivial.
This fascinating article at Variety Magizine provides detailed insights into the history of Sweeny Todd and the relationship of the prodcutions to this current revival.
The show officially opens this Thursday, November 3, and the New York Post provides great background information.
Hopefully, we will have updates of the reviews beginning next Friday.

A Season of Discontent? I Don’t Think So! (Part II)

October 30, 2005 · No Comments

The emerging theory in the media of the demise of the Bush Administration is perpetuated in today’s edition of The New York Daily News. Thomas M. Defrank writes the following as a part of the introduction to his column.

Now, what the President’s father might call the “ugly S-word” has descended on his son’s administration - further damaging a presidency that was already crippled and on the verge of unraveling.

“We used to have a problem with hubris,” one senior Bush adviser said glumly. “Well, there ain’t much swagger right now.”

The liberals must not realize that they are setting the stage for another comeback by George W. Bush. William Kristol of The Weekly Standard and one of the pre-imminent conservative voices in Washington DC has a wonderful piece posted which states the case for Bush’s comeback very well.

With the dénouement of the Miers fiasco and the Fitzgerald investigation, President Bush’s beaten-down political fortunes should be ripe for a rebound. As we’ve said before, the recipe for starting a rally is straightforward: Get back to basics on the economy, the courts, and foreign policy. Go on the offensive in all of these areas. To regain the ground that was lost and to forge further ahead will require energy, discipline, and boldness from the Bush administration, and from the president himself.

John Podhoretz, in a column which recalls the central thesis of Bill Sammon’s marvelous book, MisUnderestimated, says that many people are “Misjudging Dubbya.”

And remember, there are signs all over of great news. There is a good chance that Scooter Libby will never be convicted, and in any case, The White House went largely untouched on Friday.

Rush Limbaugh
is stil lthe number one talk radio host by a wide margin. Charles Krauthammer reminds us of the things that didn’t happen on Friday. The “Today Show” recently embarrassed themselves, and conservatives are still laughing.

Over at the JunkYard Blog, they are still detailing the failues of local and state government in the aftermath ofHurricane. Ian Schwartz exposes another foolish move by long time white house correspondent and battle-ax, Helen Thomas with great commentary and video of coverage.

There is more bad news for the supporters of Reform Ohio Now, and this is good news for Republicans in Ohio. There are maps available of the potential congressional distrticts which would exist if Reform Ohio Now is passed.

Charles Krauthammer destroys the credibility of Brent Scowcroft and hands President Bush the gift of his strong analysis.

Don’t be fooled by the media, there is no season of discontent here in Ohio.

The Odd Couple by Neil Simon

October 30, 2005 · No Comments

Since we are currently involved in the most intense rehearsals of the Neil Simon play Rumors, I am most fascinated by the premiere of his most well known comedy The Odd Couple on Broadway this past week. Reading the reviews is an escape on all its’ own. This is my attempt to provide the most extensive list of Odd Couple links on the web.
Broadway.com always provides its’ very useful review summary.

Rob Kendt in his broadway.com review.
A fabulous playbill.com article highlighting opening night.

Ben Brantley in his New York Times review.
Mr. Brantley has some colorful comments in his article:”But Mr. Lane is by nature a Broadway baby, and his line readings are sometimes frilled with self-parodyingly showbizzy flourishes and intonations. And while he wears his slob’s costumes (Ann Roth is the designer) with an appropriate Neanderthal slouch, when this Oscar spiffs up, for work or to impress the ladies, he turns into a well-groomed clotheshorse despite himself. (He might make an excellent Felix.)”

Clives Barnes pens his review in the New York Post.
The Yahoo news summary of reviews. Howard Kissel in the New York Daily News.

When visiting on Manhattan, I love to read the Post and the Daily News every day. These papers are two of the finest newspapers in the world. They are fierce competitors, and the papers have their tabloid characteristics, however, these are real newspapers with great articles based upon real research with extensive documentation.

It would be amazing to see this production of The Odd Couple.

Matthew Morrison

October 29, 2005 · No Comments

Anyone who enjoys Broadway will love the slide show narrated by Matthew Morrison at The New York Times website today. Morrison is the star of Footloose, Hairspray, The Light in The Piazza, and now the new Broadway play, The Naked Girl in the Appian Way. The play sounds like it would be absolutely wonderful. Featured in the cast is also Richard Thomas, John Boy from the Waltons television series. Thomas is a broadway veteran who has had a distinguished career.

Enjoy this slide show at The Times.

"A Season of Discontent?" I Don’t Think So!!

October 29, 2005 · 1 Comment

Last Sunday on Fox News Sunday, Juan Williams stated that, “we seem to be in a season of discontent.” Without a doubt, Juan was referring to the plethora of inside the beltway topics being discussed on the panel moderated by Chris Wallace. Juan’s boiler plate analysis from a liberal talking head is nothing new, in fact, the liberals have spent much of the last twenty-five years since Ronald Reagan’s first inauguration trying to tell the American People that things are worse for them than could possibly know. Manhattan liberals and snobby Washington DC elites are often reprehensibly out of touch with real Americans as they function inside their artificial hypobaric chamber lacking in any small dose of reality. To witness this “bubble of unreality,” one must only give a cursory glance around the cable news channels and watch Chris Matthews and other hysterical journalists panting in breathless anticipation this week to tell us the latest “news” from a collapsing White House. To Juan Williams and all the talking heads in Washington we have a message: from out here in Red State Country we aren’t experiencing any season of discontent. In our busy lives, there simply isn’t time to wallow in your liberal, Kool-aid induced season of discontent.
While counting on the notion that we the people need the elite liberal politicians and talking heads to clarify the picture for us, citizens are dealing with real life issues that make them unavailable for Juan Williams contrived season of discontent. The frantic left-wing journalists were the first ones on the scene to start telling us of George Bush’s failures in Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. Yet, when was the last time you saw or read a story updating you on the progress in these red state stricken areas? While the sleazy, tabloid networks and cable news outlets move on to their “season of discontent” regular red state Americans are struggling to put their lives back together. The media attempted to capture the attention deficit disordered minds of their superficial audiences with hyped stories of disparaged minorities in New Orleans. The media largely ignored Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida because their Republican Governors took responsibility for their states and worked well with the federal government to provide real relief for their people in helping them rebuild shattered lives. But the real point is that the residents of these devastated areas are facing real live tragedies with courage and strength that are not easily made into a rallying-cry to bash President Bush.

Moreover, there are other events which demonstrate that most of middle America is not participating in the synthetic season of discontent.
  • Friday’s news conference by Patrick Fitzgerald was more notable for things he said and for the things that didn’t happen.

  • Conservative Blogs are getting more and more attention everywhere and all the time.
  • Paul Begala actually told the truth about something.
  • Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination.
  • A New Justice is on the horizon.

It will be interesting to see what intellectual gems emanate forth from Juan Williams and the other liberal talking heads this Sunday. Undoubtedly, they will be trying still to convince America that the Valerie Plame case is about the flawed case for war, and running their decades old play trying to convince us that we exist in an eternal season of discontent.

Undisputable!

October 28, 2005 · No Comments

Nothing in today’s news about the indictment of Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Vice-President Cheney’s Chief of Staff, changes in any way the incontorvertible evidence cited in the Thespis Journal last Sunday. No one has even been indicted for leaking a name!

Patrick Fitzgerald has stated categorically that today’s indictment has nothing to do with the war. This is a unique day for justice in American History! Patrick Fitzgerald seems to want to convict Mr. Libby and argue the entire case in front of the media. Fitzgerald did make a couple of revealing statements which trump the hopes of liberals to tie this case to the war.

“We have not made any allegation that Libby knowingly/intentionally outed a covert agent.” He also stated that, “This indictment is not about the war. Not about the propriety of the war. This is stripped of that debate and focused on a narrow transaction…they will be frustrated and not good for process and fairness of trial.”

This post at the politcal teen is better than watching hours of cable news.

Michelle Malkin
has live-blogging and complete coverage. Her coverages are truly amazing. Michelle emphasizes that no one is charged with the underlying crime of outing Valerie Plame.

Powerline
has a short, insightful article.

I am not in favor of trying this case in the court of public opinion. I think Fitzgerald compromised his own integrity today with his presentation convicting Mr. Libby.

Thoughts on Life

October 28, 2005 · No Comments

By now, most of you may know that I have my favortie conservative writers. I go back to them as often as they may pen a new essay to refresh my mind, and to find core values which are exploited each day by many people around me. Each of us needs a philisophical statement to use of “this we believe, this we proclaim. These bedrock principles of life; these core, guiding values serve to keep us grounded, focused, and moving ever onward towards better places in our lives.
Peggy Noonan is a favorite for many reasons. Her association with Ronald Reagan and her participation in crafting his vision for the United States provides a basis for her credibility. Her weekly columns are a testimony to her highly developed intellect. Her insights are singular, and sometimes breath-taking in their scope.

“This is. Our elites, our educated and successful professionals, are the ones who are supposed to dig us out and lead us. I refer specifically to the elites of journalism and politics, the elites of the Hill and at Foggy Bottom and the agencies, the elites of our state capitals, the rich and accomplished and successful of Washington, and elsewhere. I have a nagging sense, and think I have accurately observed, that many of these people have made a separate peace. That they’re living their lives and taking their pleasures and pursuing their agendas; that they’re going forward each day with the knowledge, which they hold more securely and with greater reason than nonelites, that the wheels are off the trolley and the trolley’s off the tracks, and with a conviction, a certainty, that there is nothing they can do about it. “

Ms. Noonan continues: “That’s what I think is going on with our elites. There are two groups. One has made a separate peace, and one is trying to keep the boat afloat. I suspect those in the latter group privately, in a place so private they don’t even express it to themselves, wonder if they’ll go down with the ship. Or into bad territory with the trolley.”

They’re At It Again….

October 26, 2005 · No Comments

Check out Michelle Malkin today. Condoleeza Rice is just the most recent conservative person who the press is trying to make into a monster. For those of you who missed it, her testimony last week on capital hill was nothing short of amazing.

Have you seen this Condi for President site?

This column by Dick Morris makes the strongest case yet to draft Condi.

Condoleeza 2008!
